Types of transportation system
Transportation is defined by the oxford dictionary as the action of transporting someone or something or the process of being transported. Transportation is no doubt one of the basic necessities of life that helps better living. In the ancient times, moving goods or people from one place to another seems to be pretty much difficult as the modern transportation system was not invoked. Our fore fathers used camels, donkey and horses as a means of conveying people or goods from one place to another but, we would agree that is is nothing compared to the modern transportation system we now enjoy.
Types of transportation system. Their advantages and disadvantages , we will discuss the major modes of conveying people or goods from one place to another in this computer age. Some of it’s advantages and disadvantages like the cost of purchase or maintenance.
Four major modes of transportation are:
- Land transportation through the use of bicycle, tricycle or car
- Water transportation through the use of boats, canoe or ship
- Rail transportation through the use of train
- Air transportation through the use of aero plane, helicopter or jets
Land transportation system is the most common mode of transportation used by fvarious people for different purposes. The invention of cars has made land transportation very easy unlike the use of bicycle which is a lot more stressful and can not accommodate much people or goods like car.
Advantages of land transportation are:
- It is not very expensive to board
- It is easier to get unlike other modes of transportation
- It is cheaper to maintain
Disadvantage of land transportation is:
- The high rate of fatal accident and damage of goods due to bad road network
Water transportation has been helpful with the use of boats and canoe. The invention of high sophisticated ship that can carry large goods or people across the water has been a great improvement to the water transportation system
Advantages of water transportation are:
- It gives easy access to people in riverine areas
- It is cheaper to board
- It is cheaper to maintain
Disadvantage of water transportation is:
- It increases mortality rate and damage of goods by drowning it’s content especially during the rainy season
Rail transportation system is much easier with the use of train and since the invention of modernized train stations across the globe to increase easy access to this kind of transportation system
Advantages of rail transportation are:
- It is very cheap to afford unlike other modes of transportation
- It can accommodate lots of passengers or goods
Disadvantages of rail transportation are:
- It is the slowest among all other modes of transportation
- It is not easily acquired
- It is very expensive to maintain
Air transportation system is fast growing overtime with the invention of aero planes and private jet for individuals who desire extra luxury
Advantages of air transportation are:
- It is the fastest among all other modes of transportation
- It gives more comfort
- It gives more luxury
- It is more secure in terms of bad road network or against kidnappers, thieves or arm bandits
Disadvantages of air transportation are:
- It is very expensive to board
- It is very expensive to acquire
- It is very expensive to maintain
- In case of a pal crash, the survival rates are usually very high. Literally, there are little or no survival in cases of a plane crash.
In conclusion, air transportation system has overtime proven to be more effective and the best mode of transportation using various airlines to render it’s services to consumers.
